See allWhen starting a knitting or crochet project where you want to prioritize a soft and luxurious quality, alpaca wool is one of the yarn types you should consider. Alpaca wool is known for its high quality and soft properties, but did you know that you can actually get something even softer?
It is, of course, baby alpaca that we are talking about. This extra luxurious version of alpaca wool is butter-soft and light as a feather. Here you get some of the most comfortable yarn on the market, and we are therefore pleased to offer baby alpaca at Mayflower. We have the yarn in a rich selection of colors, and you can even buy the yarn at a good price on our webshop. The yarn can be used for designs for both children and adults, because who doesn't love a wonderfully soft sweater?
What is baby alpaca yarn?
It might be obvious to conclude that baby alpaca wool comes from the young offspring of alpacas due to the name. However, that is not entirely the case, because even though the yarn type is called 'baby alpaca', the wool actually comes from fully grown animals.
But baby alpaca still differs from regular alpaca wool. Baby alpaca yarn is made from the wool on the underside of the alpaca’s belly. The wool under the belly is much finer compared to regular alpaca wool, and that is precisely why this type of wool has its own name and category with us.
The Softest and Warmest Choice for Clothing
If you are looking for the absolutely softest type of yarn, baby alpaca is the right choice. The unique softness makes baby alpaca completely non-scratchy and at the same time very light. Additionally, the wool is free from lanolin, making baby alpaca a good choice for allergy sufferers – and the yarn is also incredibly durable.
Baby alpaca comes from the alpaca, an animal that lives high up in the mountains of Peru. Therefore, it requires something extra to keep the animal warm. This necessary trait means that alpaca wool has an incredibly good insulating ability – actually 5 times better than wool from a sheep.
Therefore, baby alpaca is a perfect choice when you want warm clothing for the winter. The wool keeps you warm when used in, for example, a sweater, hat, etc., while the soft quality ensures that you get incredibly nice clothing. In other words, the yarn offers a wealth of good qualities.
