Mayflower Elba is spun on wonderfully soft, brushed Suri alpaca. The fibers from the Suri alpaca make Elba an extraordinarily soft and airy lace yarn with a fluffy structure. 

Knitted or crocheted alone, Elba becomes feather-light, and with 2 or more threads together, the result is full and cozy. The soft Elba is also ideal as a companion thread together with, for example, wool. Compared to silk mohair, Elba does not shed like the smooth mohair fiber can. Therefore, Elba can be a fantastic alternative to Super Kid Silk - and it is more affordable.

Can be used for

The wool from alpaca is generally much softer and warmer than sheep wool, which makes Alpaca yarn very popular. The fine fibers with insulating air pockets provide a warm yarn with high breathability. Suri alpaca is also the softest alpaca fiber, which makes Elba an exceptionally soft yarn quality. The yarn feels comfortable both to work with and to have close to the skin. It is light and airy and has a matte sheen, and the velvety soft alpaca fibers give a lovely texture. Polyamide holds the fine fibers together and adds high durability without compromising comfort.

Elba can be a fantastic alternative to silk mohair in Mayflower Super Kid Silk, as Elba has even finer and softer fibers. You can replace Super Kid Silk with Elba 1:1 and use the yarn for the many Patterns and designs that are made for the other yarn. However, always remember to make a swatch and wash it according to the instructions before starting your project. Also, be aware that Elba is a brushed Alpaca yarn and is therefore more subdued and matte on the surface than Super Kid Silk, which instead has a glossy sheen.

Elba has a lovely long running length, so you don't need many skeins for, for example, a sweater. The yarn is fantastic for soft clothing such as sweaters and cardigans, as well as accessories like hats, shawls, etc. With one strand of the thin lace yarn, projects like shawls and thin blouses become really light and airy. Depending on the density you want, you can use anything from needle/hook 3-5 mm. If you want more volume, you can knit or crochet with 2, 3, or more strands of Elba together and still achieve a light and airy result.
