Knitted or crocheted alone, Elba becomes fluffy, and with 2 or more strands together, the result is rich and fluffy. The soft Elba is also ideal as a companion yarn with wool, for example. Compared to silk mohair, Elba does not shed like smooth mohair fiber can. Therefore, Elba can be a great alternative to Super Kid Silk - and it's more affordable.

Can be used to..

The wool from alpaca is generally much softer and warmer than sheep's wool, making alpaca yarn very popular. The fine fibers with insulating air pockets provide a warm yarn with high breathability. Suri alpaca is also the softest alpaca fiber, making Elba an exceptionally soft yarn quality. The yarn feels comfortable both to work with and to wear next to the skin. It is light and airy with a matte sheen, and the velvety alpaca fibers give it a lovely texture. Polyamide holds the fine fibers together and adds durability without compromising comfort.

Elba can be a great alternative to silk mohair in Mayflower Super Kid Silk, as Elba has even finer and softer fibers. You can replace Super Kid Silk with Elba 1:1 and use the yarn for the many patterns and designs made with the other yarn. However, always remember to make a swatch and wash it according to the instructions before starting your project, and be aware that Elba is a brushed alpaca yarn and therefore has a duller and more matte finish than Super Kid Silk, which has a glossy sheen instead.

Elba has a nice long running length, so you won't need many balls for a sweater, for example. The yarn is great for soft garments such as sweaters and cardigans as well as accessories such as hats, shawls etc. With one strand of the thin lace yarn, projects such as shawls and thin blouses become really light and airy. Depending on the density you want, you can use anything from 3-5 mm needles. If you want more volume, you can knit or crochet with 2, 3 or more strands of Elba together and still get a light and airy result.
