Mayflower Birmingham is a fine, woolly tweed yarn that is spun for Mayflower in Italy. The yarn has a classic tweed look with a twist that has resulted in the most fascinating colors. Combined with the natural comfort of the yarn, it's a brilliant blend that can quickly become a wonderful new favorite yarn.

Mayflower Birmingham is spun primarily from soft, high-quality South American wool with added alpaca and viscose, which together give the yarn a delicious, organic softness. The lustrous, soft alpaca fibers come from the alpaca's fur. The animals live mainly in Peru, where their unique fur has been developed to withstand the most extreme weather conditions in the highlands. The thin, fine fibers are hollow and therefore insulating, which are desirable properties in textiles. Wool and alpaca fibers are both classic elements of quality yarn, and together they create a soft and naturally durable structure that provides comfort and looks great in both knitting and crochet.

The yarn's beautiful play of colors is breathtaking. The beautiful tweed skeins are made from viscose and are carefully matched to the shades of the yarn. The fiber content absorbs color differently and therefore provides depth of color and the finest mottling. The color chart has been carefully created so that the shades can easily be combined to create beautiful stripes or fascinating fair-isle patterns, where the tweed dots add an extra layer of color.

Birmingham is especially great for sweaters, cardigans, shawls, interiors, etc. The yarn will also look great with a companion yarn of e.g. Mayflower Super Kid Silk if you want that mohair luxury feel.

The fine quality is spun into a relatively thin yarn, where we recommend a 3-3½ mm needle. For the same reason, it's also easy to double up on 4-5 mm needles to achieve more volume and maintain the same wonderful softness and interesting look. In fact, you don't have to do much to make your project look like a million with Birmingham. Simple stockinette stitch or textured patterns with knit and purl stitches are enough to create a stunning effect.
