Yarn
(76 products)Mayflowers' yarn range consists of all imaginable fibers and compositions.
When Mayflower was founded in 1951, we produced exclusively Cotton yarn, and all patterns were thus also only with cotton yarn. With only one fiber in the range, we had the opportunity to focus solely on making our cotton yarn as exceptional as possible. Mayflower's cotton yarn was therefore known and used in many homes. For example, it quickly became known as 'the one with the ship'.
Since then, we have followed both development and demand, and today we have many different yarn qualities that are spun on several other fibers than just cotton. High quality cotton continues to play a major role in our range, where it can be purchased as 100% cotton or in combination with other fiber types. But today there are also fibers such as wool, Mohair, alpaca, bamboo viscose and polyamide to be found in our yarn qualities. We are continuously adding new yarns in exciting Fiber compositions, which has a different qualities than our current yarns. We strive to make new qualities that can do something new or plays well with other of our qualities and give a different effect.
Common for all our yarns in the range is; we have a strong focus on creating the highest quality products.

View allYarn is for everyone
Yarns are for everyone and can be used for every imaginable project. Yarn is not just for knit and Crochet, as it also can be used for many other creative projects. Only your imagination sets the limit for the use of yarn.
You don't have to be a experienced knitter or crocheter to enjoy the yarn in Mayflower's range. We are constantly developing designs and recipes with yarn from Mayflower, which is targeted both the practiced and the newbie.
What is yarn?
Yarn consists of different fibers, which in a process are spun together and turn into yarn. Both short and long fibers, thick and thin fibers can be used as well as organic and synthetic fibers.
Yarns have different properties
You can wind yarn on the same fiber, as well as mixing the fiber types and creating a mixed yarn that has different structures and properties. The fibers have different properties and can therefore do something different. For example, some fibers are very warm, and yarn spun on these warm fibers is therefore suitable for winter clothing such as thick sweaters or a winter beanie. Others do not get so warm and are temperature-regulating and are therefore suitable for yarn to be used for summer clothing. Some fibers are very durable and therefore very suitable to use in, for example, sock yarn.
Natural and synthetic fibers
The fiber types, which are spun to yarn, derive from very different locations.
The natural and organic fibers are, for example, wool from Merino, Alpaca, Kashmir, Angora and Mohair. There are also silk, such as mulberry silk. Likewise are cotton, flax, bamboo and viscose also organic fiber.
The synthetic fibers are polyamide (also known as nylon) and acrylic.
Washing and maintenance of yarn
It can be very different to navigate how to treat your yarn, as it all depends on which fiber composition the yarn consists of and what the yarn can therefore withstand.
Some yarn can withstand being boiled, while other very gentle must be washed by hand. Some yarns can withstand centrifugation in the machine, while other yarns should be dried flat as it cannot withstand hanging to dry. Some yarn hold a lot of water and therefore becomes very heavy, so there is a risk that the knitted or crochet will be pulled out of shape if it is hanged to dry or gets twisted of water. Therefore, one recommends lying to dry instead. Other yarns, on the other hand, withstand tumbledrying and dries thus faster.
For example, wool is also partly self-cleaning. It is not often necessary to wash a wool sweater. The lanolin in the wool is a natural fat that rejects the growth of bacteria and partly also dirt and thus also smell. It is therefore a good idea to hang your wool sweater out for aeration, as any smells often disappear by themselves.
There are therefore very different methods on how to wash and maintain your yarn, but the washing instructions will always be on the banderole of the yarn. Therefore, you can safely relate to these instructions when you need to wash or dry your knitted or crocheted clothing.
What does the yarn's knitting gauge mean?
The yarn banderole always states a knitting gauge, such as 16 stitches x 26 rows = 10 x 10 cm. The knitting gauge tells, that if you knit with the yarn's recommended needle size (eg needle 6 mm), you will with 16 stitches and a total of 26 rows back and forth knit a square measuring 10 x 10 cm. This is called a knitting gauge swatch.
Any design pattern always states the recommended yarn and knitting gauge. Therefore, if you do a gauge swatch before you start knitting a sweater, you know if your sweater will be the right size when you finish it. For example, if you do not get a knitting swatch of 10 x 10 cm when you knit 16 stitches x 26 rows, but instead only measuring 7 cm, your sweater will be too small when you are done. Another example can be, if you knit more firmly or tight, your knitting swatch may be smaller.
One way to make your knitting swatch bigger is by using a thicker knitting needle and therefore not using the recommended needle of e.g. 6 mm and instead try to do a knitting swatch with needle 6.5 or 7 mm. This allows you to test if you can reach 10 x 10 cm with 16 stitches and 26 rows and thus get a sweater that fits when you are done.
On the contrary, if your knitting test becomes too large and measures, for example, 14 cm, your sweater will be equally too wide and long. You should therefore try to do a knitting swatch with a smaller needle such as 5.5 or 5 mm.
What does yarn's running length mean?
The yarn has a specific running length of the x-number of yards, which implies that the yarn is these x yards if you unwind it. Therefore, if you need to use, for example, 5 skeins of yarn in a quality with a running length of 150 meters, you will need a total of 750 meters of yarn for the specific project. Therefore, if you use a yarn other than what the pattern refers to, see if the alternative yarn has the same running length as the other yarn. For example, if the alternative yarn has a shorter running length of eg 100 meters, use 7.5 key of the alternative yarn to have enough for your project.
The running length is always indicated on the yarn banderole.
How do I find an alternative yarn?
Around all yarn there is a banderole on which you will find the yarn's knitting gauge (eg 16 stitches x 26 rows) and the yarn running length (eg 150 meters).
If you find a pattern for a sweater, which you would like to knit, there will always be both knitting gauge and a recommended yarn in the pattern. This way you have the opportunity to find an alternative yarn and get the same result as with the recommended yarn.
In other words, you need to find a yarn alternative that has the same knitting gauge, as you will thus have a sweater that has the same dimensions and suits you. If the running length of the recommended yarn is different from the alternative yarn, simply customize the amount of yarn skeins. In other words, if the alternative yarn has a longer running length, you should not use as many skeins.
If you do not get quite the same knitting gauge, it may also be that with the alternative yarn you have to use either a thicker or thinner needle to get the same knitting gauge of eg 16 stitches x 26 rows and thus be sure to get a finish sweater with the right measurements.
