Salkantay Sweater Mini Pattern

Construction:
The sweater is knitted from the top down. Cast on stitches for the back piece, which is knitted back and forth on the needle while making increases on each side. Then pick up stitches for the left and then the right shoulder piece, which are joined to form the front piece. The front and back pieces are joined to form the body, which is knitted in the round in stockinette stitch. The body is finished with a rib edge. Then pick up stitches for the neck edge, which is knitted in the round in double rib. Finally, the sleeves are knitted. Pick up stitches along the sleeve opening and knit the sleeves in the round in stockinette stitch while making decreases on the underside.

Pattern: 
The body of the sweater features a South American-inspired pattern that can be knitted in two or more colors. The color that most of the sweater is knitted in is called the base color, and the color(s) that the pattern is knitted in are called the pattern color. The appearance of the pattern depends on the size:
In sizes 3-9 months, 2-3 years, 3-4 years, 4-5 years, and 5-6 years, the pattern includes both 'stars' and 'diamonds'.
In sizes 9 months-1 year and 1-2 years, the pattern consists only of 'stars', to make the pattern fit evenly around.

Size guide:
The sweater can be knitted in 7 different sizes: 3-9 months (9 months-1 year) 1-2 (2-3) 3-4 (4-5) 5-6 years with a circumference of the sweater of 54.5 (63.5) 63.5 (73) 73 (73) 73 cm. We recommend a positive ease of 10-20 cm compared to the child's chest/waist measurement. The length of the body and sleeves can be adjusted to fit the child's height.

Knitting gauge:
22 stitches x 24 rows on 10 x 10 cm in stockinette stitch.

Recommended needles:
3.5 and 4 mm Circular Needle.
