The Cassie Sweater is a unique design that is worked crosswise in shadow knit, while the neck, sleeve edges and bottom hem are worked in classic rib.

Shadow knitting gives the sweater a unique effect, as the sweater appears checkered when viewed from certain angles. The effect is created by alternating knit and purl stitches in a certain way, which creates a height difference in the stitch pattern. The shadow effect occurs when the work is moved, as the pattern is highlighted at certain angles.

The sweater is worked in Mayflower Birmingham, which is a lovely woolly tweed yarn that also contains alpaca wool. The tweed shading adds another element of color play to the Cassie Sweater, but it is the shadow knitting that is the dominant effect. Birmingham is available in many beautiful colors, and the shadow effect becomes even more apparent if you choose high-contrast yarns.

Although shadow knitting is a remarkable effect, it's not that difficult to knit. It's simply a specific combination of knit and purl stitches, which is described in a chart in the pattern.
