In a busy life, everyday tasks like laundry need to be done quickly. That's why it helps a lot when knitted or crocheted garments can be machine washed instead of having to wash them more gently by hand.

Pure wool yarn or blended yarn containing wool is generally not suitable for machine washing unless the wool is superwash treated. If superwash-treated wool is used, the yarn can withstand machine washing without shrinking or felting. Just remember to wash on a wool program and use only wool detergent.

Wool fibers naturally have small scales on them, which means that the wool will felt or shrink when machine washed more 'roughly' at higher temperatures. However, if you give the wool a superwash treatment, you can then spin a machine washable yarn. The wool gets a treatment where the small scales are laid down so that they cannot stick together and thus felt. After the treatment, the wool yarn can be machine washed on a wool program and your crocheted or knitted sweater will still retain its original shape. A superwash-treated wool yarn will also feel much smoother, as there are no frayed or scratchy scales.

Be aware of washing the yarn according to the regulations on the banderole and on wool or gentle program, even if it is a yarn for machine wash. Most superwash-treated woolen yarns typically need to be washed at 40 degrees and you should always avoid using fabric softener. Some superwash yarn can be tumble dried, while other should be hung to dry.

Mayflower, of course, have different yarns that can be machine washed. The selection includes both pure wool yarn and yarns with different fiber combinations.

It is a huge advantage as the socks will be well used during the coldest months of the year, where it is nice to be able to have a clean pair ready for use. Particularily, families with children often need to wash several times a week, if not daily. It is therefore a really big advantage that home-knit or -crochet maternity gifts from friends and family come in yarn for machine washing, as it can quickly become an incomprehensible task to have time to wash the fine knit. Or you may risk that an otherwise fine sweater is not used at all for fear of making it dirty. Therefore, an advantage may be to search the yarn selection before starting a project and make some considerations. Depending on what you want to knit or crochet, it can sometimes be a great advantage to choose a yarn that can be machine washed.
